Tarmac vs Block Paving – Which Is Better for Your Driveway?

If you are looking at getting a new driveway, two of the most popular surfaces you will come across are tarmac and block paving. Both are durable, widely used across the UK, and suitable for most residential and commercial properties – but they are quite different in terms of cost, appearance, maintenance and longevity.

In this guide, we break down the key differences between tarmac and block paving so you can make an informed decision before you get a quote. And if you are still not sure which is right for your property, we are always happy to give honest advice when we visit your site.

What Is Tarmac?

Tarmac (also known as asphalt) is a bound surface made from a mixture of stone aggregate and bitumen. It is laid hot and compacted down to create a smooth, solid driveway surface. It has been used on driveways and roads across the UK for decades and remains one of the most cost-effective and practical driveway surfaces available.

Our tarmac driveway service covers the full installation process – excavation, sub-base preparation, drainage and surface laying – across South Wales, Abergavenny, Hereford and Monmouthshire.

What Is Block Paving?

Block paving uses individual pre-cast concrete or clay blocks laid in a pattern on a compacted sand and stone sub-base. The blocks are bedded into sharp sand and the joints between them are filled with kiln-dried sand to lock everything in place. Block paving has become the most popular driveway surface in the UK thanks to its appearance, durability and flexibility.

Our block paving driveway service covers the full installation across South Wales, Abergavenny, Hereford and Monmouthshire.

Tarmac vs Block Paving – The Key Differences

Cost

Tarmac is generally the more affordable option. For a standard single-car driveway, tarmac will typically cost less than an equivalent block paving installation. This is because tarmac installs faster and requires less labour-intensive laying work.

Block paving costs more due to the time involved in laying individual blocks, cutting to fit edges and completing the finishing details. However, it does add more kerb appeal and value to a property.

Appearance

This is where the two surfaces differ most noticeably.

Tarmac provides a clean, uniform dark grey or black finish. It is neat and functional but offers limited options in terms of patterns or colours. Some homeowners add block paving borders or edging alongside a tarmac surface to improve the overall look.

Block paving offers far more flexibility in terms of appearance. Blocks come in a wide range of colours, sizes and laying patterns – herringbone, stretcher bond, basketweave – allowing you to tailor the finish to your property. It generally adds more visual appeal and kerb appeal than tarmac.

Durability and Longevity

Both surfaces are durable when properly installed on the correct sub-base with adequate drainage.

Tarmac can last 15 to 25 years with basic maintenance. It can be prone to softening slightly in very hot weather, and the surface may develop cracks over time, particularly if the sub-base underneath was not prepared correctly.

Block paving can last 20 to 30 years or more when well-maintained. Individual blocks can be lifted and replaced if damaged, which is a significant advantage over tarmac, where repairs can be more visible.

Maintenance

Tarmac is low-maintenance in terms of day-to-day care. It can be jet-washed and occasionally re-sealed to keep it looking its best. Cracks can be repaired, but the repair is sometimes visible against the existing surface.

Block paving requires occasional re-sanding of the joints and weed control to keep it looking good. Over time, the jointing sand can wash out and allow weeds to grow between the blocks if not maintained. That said, it is easy to resand, and a well-maintained block-paved driveway retains its appearance for a long time.

Drainage

This is an important consideration for any driveway installation.

Tarmac is an impermeable surface, meaning water runs off the surface rather than through it. This makes drainage planning important – the surface needs to be laid with a correct fall to direct water away from the property and into an appropriate drainage point.

Block paving is also largely impermeable in traditional installations, but the joints between blocks do allow a small amount of water to filter through. Like tarmac, proper drainage planning is still required.

At Classic Paving & Fencing, we include drainage assessment and installation as part of every driveway project. Whether you choose tarmac or block paving, we make sure the water goes where it should.

Repairs

Tarmac repairs are straightforward but can be noticeable. Patching a section of tarmac is quick and effective but the patched area may be visible against the original surface as it ages at a different rate.

Block paving repairs are generally easier to carry out invisibly. Individual blocks can be lifted, the issue underneath addressed, and the blocks relaid. As long as matching blocks are available, repairs are often hard to spot.

Which Is Better – Tarmac or Block Paving?

The honest answer is that it depends on your priorities.

Choose tarmac if:

  • Budget is the main consideration
  • You want a quick, clean and practical surface
  • You are covering a large area and want to keep costs down
  • You are happy with a uniform dark finish

Choose block paving if:

  • Appearance and kerb appeal matter to you
  • You want more control over the look and finish
  • You want the option to carry out easy repairs in the future
  • You are happy to invest a bit more upfront for a premium finish

Both surfaces will serve you well when installed correctly on a proper sub-base with good drainage. The difference in longevity between a well-built tarmac driveway and a well-built block paved driveway is not as significant as many people assume – it really comes down to the quality of the groundwork underneath.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is tarmac cheaper than block paving? Yes, tarmac is generally the more affordable option. Block paving requires more labour and time to install, which makes it more expensive. The exact difference depends on the size of the driveway and the specification involved. See our driveway cost guide for more detail.

Which lasts longer – tarmac or block paving? Both surfaces are durable when properly installed. Tarmac typically lasts 15 to 25 years and block paving can last 20 to 30 years or more. The quality of the sub-base and drainage underneath has more impact on longevity than the surface material itself.

Can you mix tarmac and block paving? Yes. A popular approach is to use tarmac as the main driveway surface and add block paving borders or edging around the perimeter. This gives the cost benefits of tarmac with a more finished appearance.

Which is easier to repair – tarmac or block paving? Block paving is generally easier to repair without it being noticeable. Individual blocks can be lifted and relaid. Tarmac repairs are effective but the patched area can sometimes be visible.
